This pattern gets its name from the Lord of the Rings and refers to the “small shirt of mail” that Bilbo gives to Frodo: “Also there is this!" said Bilbo, bringing out a parcel which seemed to be rather heavy for its size. He unwound several folds of old cloth, and held up a small shirt of mail. It was close-woven of many rings, as supple almost as linen, cold as ice, and harder than steel. It shone like moonlit silver, and was studded with white gems.” 

The sweater is knit from the top down. The raglan increases are made with yarn-overs that create holes and add texture to the knitting. There are no decreases in the sleeves, but the bind-off pulls the hem in slightly, creating a hint of a bell-shape. The bind-off on the body is on the contrary very loose, creating a more wavy hem.
The pattern area on the yoke creates a pull on the fabric, making the front shorter than the back. The different knitting techniques on hems and yoke thus add shaping to the garment in a simple way, making it look way more complex than it is. Knitting magic…
